I’ll be honest—I was the mom who chose to prioritize sleep over squeezing in every outing.
It wasn’t always the easiest choice, especially when it meant leaving early or saying no to plans, but I saw how much better my babies did with consistent sleep. Less overtired-ness, smoother bedtimes, sleeping through the night consistently, and overall happier days. I also know this isn’t the choice—or even the option—for everyone. Sometimes older kids’ sports schedules, birthday parties, school pickups, or work commitments come first, and that’s just real life. But whenever I could protect naps and wake windows, I did—and it made a noticeable difference. My toddlers, now 2 and 4, have consistently slept 11-13 hours a night since 6 months, and I credit this wake window and nap schedule entirely!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t have to do this perfectly to see results. Even small efforts to protect sleep can go a long way. Follow your baby’s cues, stay as consistent as you realistically can, and give yourself a lot of grace in the process. The early months can feel like a blur, but the rhythms you build now really do pay off—and easier bedtimes and well-rested days are so worth it.
