Having a simple nap routine can completely change your baby’s ability to sleep—both during the day and at night.

Prioritizing a nap schedule helps prevent overtiredness, which is one of the biggest reasons babies struggle with short naps, frequent night waking, and difficult bedtimes. When babies are awake for the right amount of time, their bodies can settle into a natural rhythm, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. A consistent (but flexible) routine gives your baby the predictability they need for better sleep and happier, more regulated days.

It's not always the easiest choice—especially when it meant leaving early or saying no to plans—but you'd be surprised how much better babies do with consistent sleep. Less overtiredness, smoother bedtimes, more consistent nights, and overall happier days. I also know this isn’t always realistic for everyone. Sometimes older kids’ schedules, birthday parties, school pickups, or work commitments take priority—and that’s just real life. But whenever you can, try to protect naps and wake windows. My toddlers, now 2 and 4, have slept 11–13 hours a night consistently since 6 months, and I truly credit that to prioritizing their wake windows and nap schedule.

0–3 Months Nap Schedule

In the newborn stage, naps are frequent, short, and often unpredictable—and that’s completely normal. Instead of following a strict schedule, focus on wake windows of about 45–90 minutes and watching your baby’s sleepy cues.
